We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.
A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
