Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
